في عام 1966 وقبل أشهر من فوز إنجلترا ببطولة كأس العالم، تمت محاولة لسرقة الكأس، ويبدو أن ذلك تم بواسطة أحد رجال العصابات في لندن.
وتشير المزاعم إلى أن سيدني كوغلر وشقيقه ريغ وراء هذه الحادثة الغامضة، حيث استهدفا الكأس المسماة باسم الفرنسي “غول ريميه”، الذي كان رئيس الفيفا ما بين 1921 و1954.
وقد اختفت الكأس أثناء عرضها في المعرض العام بقاعة الميثودية المركزية في وستمنستر، وسط لندن.

الآن وبعد مرور كل هذه العقود الطويلة، فقد روى غاري، ابن ريغ، للمرة الأولى، القصة المثيرة وراء واحدة من أكثر سرقات العالم سيئة السمعة.
وصرح الابن لصحيفة ديلي “ميرور”، بأن سيدني فعل ذلك من أجل التشويق وليس لتحقيق أي مكسب مالي “فقط لأن ذلك كان سهلاً للغاية”.
وأضاف: “في الشارع بعد الخروج من الأبواب، رفع سيدني سترته وقال لرفيقه ريغ.. انظر إلى هذا”.
وفتح أحد جانبي سترته، وكانت المفاجأة أنه يحمل كأس العالم معه.
ويزعم ريغ الابن أن والده وعمه قاما بدس الكأس الذهبية في زريبة لأحد الأقارب.

كلب يحصل على الكأس
وقد أدت الفضيحة في 20 مارس 1966 إلى واحدة من أكبر التحقيقات في تاريخ الشرطة البريطانية.
وفي النهاية عثر كلب يدعى بيكلز على الكأس مرمية وسط شجيرات خارج منزل صاحبه في جنوب لندن، وذلك بعد أسبوع واحد من اختفائها.
وقد تمت مكافأة صاحب الكلب واسمه ديفيد كوربيت بمبلغ 6000 جنيه إسترليني.
وبعد أربعة أشهر رفعت إنجلترا نفس الكأس في ملعب ويمبلي، بعد تغلبها على ألمانيا الغريبة 4 مقابل 2.
توفي سيدني بالسرطان في عام 2005، في حين توفي ريغ في عام 2012.
